Prior to attending QJs Authentic Speaking course I was confident about standing up and presenting a pre prepared and rehearsed presentation or lecture to small diverse audience. I had to be - this was part of my role as an employee previously and now an essential element of my business.

What the course has made me realise is that when you want to present yourself to an audience and you are talking about a subject that you are passionate about or know inside out, that it is so much more compelling and engaging when it is presented from the heart. There is no need to prepare - the presentation should flow knowledgably, naturally and enthusiastically with greater authenticity.

I now take less time to prepare presentations, I utilise fewer presentational aids and I feel more confident and engaging than ever before.

I finally had the opportunity to put the course into practice. I had to stand up at the Rotary Club of Folkestone (all businessmen) for 5 minutes to talk about the Save Canterbury Cathedral Appeal.

I gave it all a try - deep breaths, not planning my speech too much etc., and it worked!

I spoke about how the appeal was doing so far, then about how I got involved in the appeal and what the cathedral meant to me and there wasn't one trace of squeaky voice, panic or feeling about 16!

Building Surveyor

Surveyors are taught from the very start that they have Two Ears, Two Eyes and only One Mouth! In other words listen and observe twice as much as you talk. These are wise words but at times our lives require us to be more out spoken. To be noticed.

I had a need to be noticed and to speak out. Not an easy task for a surveyor, as an individual who is taught to observe and comment as little as possible.

But the observer is silent no more as he has been shown how to preach!

QJs' ideas, his evangelical and fanatical devotion to creating a speakers 'presence' has given me a voice.
